St. Francis and Clare Secondary School in Lusaka, Zambia

This is our lighthouse project in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. St. Francis and Clare is located in Chipata Compound, a very poor district, and to date it has been the only place where children could attend secondary school after grade six.

St. Francis and Clare was built in part with the support of the Umckaloabo Foundation. Since April 2020, teenagers there have been able to attend eighth through twelfth grade there and benefit from good classes. That said, schools in Zambia have to charge tuition, since the state pays for teachers’ salaries but the schools themselves have to cover all of the costs of operating and equipping the school.

Schooling opportunities for young people

We offer the perspective of good schooling to children from poor families who cannot afford to pay for education. In the meantime we have been able to arrange a sufficient number of scholarships to the St. Francis and Clare Secondary School for students in need. This gives young people in Lusaka a way to make their way out of poverty by giving them a solid education and vocational training.

Offering a scholarship

When you sponsor a scholarship, your annual contribution of 120 euros a year (which amounts to 10 euros a month) covers the fees for a child to attend the St. Francis and Clare School. The scholarship initially entails a one-year commitment so that the children can plan accordingly. Even though we hope your financial support will continue on a long-term basis, you are free to end your commitment at any time after the first year.

If you want to keep supporting your child, you don’t have to do anything: your commitment will be automatically renewed. If you only want to commit for a year, please let us know before the respective school year ends.

Yes, I will sponsor a student in Zambia for at least a year!

Our powerhouse in Zambia – Loice Kashangura

In Lusaka we work with the Franciscan nun Loice Kashangura. She herself comes from a poor family and understands how important education is for a good future.

After the school opened in April 2020, she continued to actively develop “her” school and dedicated herself to financing and implementing important projects. As a result, we were able to set up a solar panel and home-economics facilities.

Sister Loice was delighted that students could come to St. Francis and Clare.

“I am glad that we now have the children with us.  I strongly believe in education.  It paves the way out of poverty.  I have seen so many times what education can do.”
