BECOME A SPONSOR – OPEN DOORS
The schools the Umckaloabo Foundation supports are often located in regions where people rarely travel: disadvantaged and often remote areas in southern Africa. This is exactly where education is most needed — and at the same time, where it is least accessible. If a student’s route to school is up to 80 kilometers, there is no way for them to go to class on a daily basis. In such cases, often the only solution is a boarding school. Some of the schools we finance offer just that: a safe place for children to live and receive an education.
That said, the distances involved are not the only obstacle. Many young people grow up in difficult family circumstances where properly learning is all but impossible. Here too, a boarding school can make the critical difference: it creates space for education, development and a future. We initiated a scholarship program in Zambia and Malawi so that children from poorer families can have this opportunity as well. Our coordinators on site link warm-hearted sponsors to the students who urgently need assistance. And they do so with great success: at the moment there are around 165 scholarships — and each and every one of them changes someone’s life.

ENCOUNTERS
In early 2024, some of the sponsors even had the opportunity to personally make the acquaintance of some of the scholarship recipients. These encounters are a very special moment for both parties. The scholarship sponsors can see firsthand how and where their support makes a difference. And the young people? They are delighted by the interest of outsiders, ask curious questions about life in Germany - and learn a little more.
SCHOLARSHIPS CAN ALSO BE A TEAM EFFORT
It’s very easy to sponsor a scholarship, no matter whether you do so alone, as a family, with friends or among colleagues. Your contribution of 39 euros a month (468 euros a year) means that you are making it possible for a young person to live at the boarding school and acquire school supplies.
And the best part? Your help makes a direct difference — without any detours. We are always looking for dedicated people who want to get involved. After all, every scholarship opens doors — to education, to self-confidence, to a better future.
