VOLUNTEERING FOR AFRICA ...

The work of the Umckaloabo Foundation lives from the commitment its enthusiastic volunteers show, both in Germany and in Africa.

For many years now, a group of especially active volunteers have organized our scholarship programs in Malawi and Zambia. They work closely with coordinators on site, arrange scholarships for needy students and ensure regular communication between the schools and the sponsors. This creates a bridge of solidarity which spans continents.

Other volunteers organize information booths, operate the Foundation’s website and manage communication with and about the Africa Runners. Their devotion to this cause helps make sure that our projects have a solid foundation and raises awareness about our work.

... AND IN AFRICA

Volunteering can take many other forms as well, however: In March and June 2024, two young adults from Germany traveled to spend three months and four weeks, respectively, at the St. Mauritius School in Malawi. There they helped in the classrooms, shared their experiences and returned home with many new impressions.

In 2022, a volunteer from Spain spent six weeks in Zambia helping look after children and providing day care.

These sorts of stays help foster authentic connections and promote an understanding of how other people live. Anyone — from college students to senior citizens, from teachers to bookkeepers to engineers — can make use of their personal life experiences and skills by putting them to use in these projects, and they themselves will also benefit from volunteer service on site.
