Golf tournament raises donations for St. Steven's School in Malawi

In the course of a longer trip to Germany, Pastor John Moyo from Malawi, whom we know as “Father John,” came to Karlsruhe in late June 2023. At a charity golf tournament with over 50 participants, he was able to raise around €15,000 in donations for his beloved project, building St. Steven’s school in Kasantha. At the event, he described the current situation in Malawi and enthusiastically raised awareness about the different projects in which he promotes education, and St. Steven's school is only one of many. He told the group, "In Malawi, even minor contributions have a major effect." And his projects get results, as can clearly be seen by the excellent grades that students get at “his” schools.

David Seifried from the Catholic youth group KJG of St. Martin’s in Ettlingen was able to present a check for nearly €12,900 in donations to Father John and Olaf Schwabe, who is on the board of the Umckaloabo Foundation. The funds were raised at the KJG’s annual fun run at the Horbachpark in Ettlingen; this year’s event was dedicated to building St. Steven’s school in Kasantha.

St. Steven's Secondary School is a ray of light on the horizon for the young people in the Kasantha region in Malawi, because it means that for the first time they will have the opportunity to attend a secondary school and greatly enhance their prospects of receiving a thorough education. Currently there is no way for the approximately 4000 students at the ten elementary schools in the region to continue their schooling.

Father John Moyo from Malawi visiting Germany

Father John has worked with the Umckaloabo Foundation for many years, and he brings a great deal of energy and dedication to his ongoing efforts to improve the lives of young people in Malawi. For the year 2023, the concrete goal was to start work on St. Steven’s Secondary School in Kasantha. St. Steven’s is our “School in Africa” this year and is thus the focus of our fundraising efforts, such as the Africa Runners’ races.
