ZAMBIA - Construction started on the Choma secondary school
2025-04-07
In the rural district of Choma, Franciscan nun Loice Kashangura will build a secondary school with the assistance of the Umckaloabo Foundation; this will open up new educational opportunities for children and teenagers in the region.
In keeping with the new Zambian legislation about education, the school will offer O-levels and A-levels. To date, there are no secondary schools in Choma which offer a way to complete education at A-level standards, which is a prerequisite for admission to a university. There are far too few slots at secondary schools in the district for its many elementary-school children.
Preparations underway
Sister Loice Kashangura, our project partner of many years in Zambia, has started with the preparatory work for the school. A place to store materials and housing for the construction workers have already been built. Wells have to be drilled down to a depth of as much as 150 meters.

School already to open in 2026
Sister Loice is confident that the first 180 students will be able to start at the school in 2026 already. The long-term objective is for some 630 children – some of whom will be boarding students – to receive a top-quality principles-based education which will prepare them to take charge of their own future.
The Choma secondary school is the 2025 "School in Africa": its construction is being financed in part by the
