MALAWI – St. Mauritius named the best secondary school
2024-09-02
St. Mauritius Secondary School, which the Umckaloabo Foundation supports, was named the 2024 top achiever among secondary schools in Malawi! In other words, no other secondary school in the entire country produced better results than St. Mauritius!
A sprint to the top
This accomplishment is that much more remarkable when you consider that St. Mauritius School only began operations in 2022. In 2020 it was our “School in Africa,” and our Africa Runners raised €51,000 in donations to help build it. St. Mauritius opened its doors to 100 students; in 2024 we were able to add further classrooms and accommodate another 100 students. In 2025 construction will continue, so ultimately there will be around 400 students.
More construction for more students and more independence
In addition to setting up new classrooms, there are other projects in the pipeline. For example, the school needs a hostel for students to stay if they come from further away, and it does not have an auditorium. And since solar energy alone is not enough to supply the school with power and storms often damage the power grid, the school also needs to be connected to the electricity network.
Economic conditions are making things challenging
St. Mauritius is on an excellent path towards success, even though it is a rather difficult route. The economic conditions there are making things challenging: factors such as high gas prices and foreign currency shortages are having an impact on the economy – and an even greater impact on the people. But the Foundation’s project partners are not giving in and are making the impossible possible! And that is why the Umckaloabo Foundation’s support will continue!
